‘Outstanding Scientists in Memoirs – Jan Kielanowski’ – monograph presentation

On February 19, 2026, on Polish Science Day, a ceremonial scientific conference dedicated to the book ‘Outstanding Scientists in Memoirs – Jan Kielanowski’ was held in the Mirrored Room of the Staszic Palace in Warsaw. The monograph is part of a publishing series presenting the profiles of outstanding scholars associated with the Polish Academy of Sciences who have had a profound impact on the development of science and the scientific community.

The event was important mainly for current and former employees of The Kielanowski Institute of Animal Physiology and Nutrition Polish Academy of Sciences. Professor Jan Kielanowski (1910–1989) was the founder and long-time director of the Institute, and outstanding scientist who created not only the foundations of modern science, but also a place where innovative projects ranging from animal biology to translational research for medicine are being still developed.

Prof. Jan Kielanowski was a pioneer of studies on metabolism and reproductive physiology in farm animals. The presented monograph presents the scientific achievements of this known all over the world scientist, including the famous ‘Kielanowski equation’ still used in animal feeding science. Also, his involvement in social issues and opposition activities in the 1970s are discussed.

During the conference the professor’s silhouette – his passion to deal with the issues of energy metabolism in animals and feed valuation – was brought closer by prof. Romuald Zabielski, prof. Monika Stanny, prof. Eugeniusz Grela, prof. Andrzej Herman and prof. Małgorzata Szumacher.

The second panel was dedicated to his opposition activities and his role in the Polish intelligentsia. In this part the discussion was held by prof. Teresa Zaniewska, Andrzej Celiński, Marek Kunicki-Goldfinger oraz prof. Andrzej Friszke. Among numerous guests were doctoral students of prof. Kielanowski – prof. Barbara Pastuszewska and prof. Stefania Smulikowska, and Professor’s grandson – Marcin Krupowicz.

The meeting was also attended on-line by the Professor’s son – prof. Piotr Kielanowski – who is also a scientist. He talked about everyday life of his Father and about their together work on the equation. The grandson remembered Grandfather as an extremely warm and honest person who infected everyone with her love for art and culture. The conference was summarized by prof. Andrzej Rychard together with prof. Małgorzata Szumacher and prof. Andrzej Friszke.

It is worth mentioning that apart from memoirs of Professor, in the publication there are presented His watercolour paintings in which Professor expressed his artistic soul and showed his sensitivity to the beauty of the world. Painting and classical music was for Him a form of relax and escape from everyday life.

The monograph is the presentation of outstanding researcher, a patriot who as a very good person in not so good reality held the scientific, social and intellectual activities.
