The Kielanowski Institute of Animal Physiology and Nutrition Polish Academy of Sciences has celebrate the 70th anniversary of its activity. On 16 October 2025 was held the ceremonial meeting of Scientific Council summarizing scientific achievements of the Institute, the history of its founding and development over the 70 years.
The guests of honour were: Vice President of Polish Academy of Sciences Mirosława Ostrowska, PhD Eng. DSc, Dean of Division II of Biological and Agricultural Sciences of the Polish Academy of Sciences prof. Krzysztof Nowak, PhD DSc and Chairman of the Board of Curators of the Division II of Biological and Agricultural Sciences of the Polish Academy of Sciences prof. Romuald Zabielski, PhD, DSc.
The ceremony was opened by the Chairman of the Scientific Council of the Institute prof. Małgorzata Szumacher, PhD, DSc, she welcomed all guests and the employees of the Institute. Next, The Director of the Institute prof. Andrzej Herman, PhD, Dsc Eng. presented the most important information about the Institute, including the history of its establishment, the topics of its scientific research and its most important achievements. He expressed his appreciation for the employees’ involvement in the development of the Institute. He added that the achievements of the Institute are highly valued by both the national and international scientific community and were created thanks to the joint work of all the Institute’s employees. He emphasized that the activity of such institution as the Institute, what counts is not only scientific achievements, research and teaching projects, but above all people – scientific, technical and administrative staff.
The jubilee was connected with the naming of the multimedia room with the name of prof. Eugeniusz Domański, who was the long-life colleague of prof. Jan Kielanowski. He served as Deputy Director for Scientific Affairs until 1978. Among the guests were the daughter of prof. Domański – prof. Barbara Lipińska, Phd DSc, and Ewa Wolińska-Witort, PhD – close colleague of prof. Domański.
We were honoured by the presence of numerous guests from friendly universities and institutes. Among the speakers were among others: prof. Jacek Skomiał, PhD DSc, prof. Stanisław Okrasa, PhD DSc and prof. Tomasz Szwaczkowski, PhD DSc. Letters of congratulations were presented to the Director, expressing recognition for the Institute’s scientific achievements and congratulating the staff for their scientific achievements to date, as well as expressing admiration for their commitment to scientific work and the daily functioning of the Institute, which is the source of its dynamic development.
The guests wished further success in striving for excellence in conducting interdisciplinary research in the field of biological sciences, animal sciences and fisheries while maintaining the highest standards and disseminating the obtained results.
During the Jubilee, Merit Crosses and medals for long-term service were awarded to Institute employees. One person received a Gold Cross of Merit, one person received a Silver Cross, and seven received Bronze Crosses. Four individuals received a Gold Medal, one received a Silver Cross, and three received a Bronze Medal.
The second part of the Jubilee was devoted to lectures. The profile and scientific activity of professor Eugeniusz Domański was presented by prof. Barbara Lipińska, PhD DSc and prof. Dorota Tomaszewska-Zaremba, PhD, DSc, and by the professor’s colleagues – Ewa Wolińska-Witort, PhD, prof. Alina Gajewska, PhD, DSc and prof. Jolanta Polksowska, PhD, DSc. Prof. Eugeniusz Domański is considered the founder of experimental endocrinology and neuroendocrinology in Poland. He introduced these fields of research to the Institute. Professor brought together a diverse group of young researchers capable of utilizing biological, biochemical, chemical, and veterinary knowledge, which led to the dynamic development of these disciplines and the recognition of the Institute as a leading scientific institution in the world conducting research in endocrinology and neuroendocrinology. Next, prof. Krystyna Koziec, PhD, DSc gave a lecture ‘The Janus face of physiology’, and prof. Piotr Tryjanowski, PhD, DSc and prof. Adam Cieślak, PhD, DSc – ‘How to eat to survive – how climate change affects animal diets’. After the official part of the celebration, a gala dinner was held, during which there was an opportunity to share memories.
The Jubilee was the great occasion to issue a special guide presenting the 70 years of the Institute’s activity, the history of its establishment, the changes taking place, the first research, and memories of people involved in the Institute’s work. Also two monographs were published: ‘Feeding Laboratory Animals’ (“Żywienie zwierząt laboratoryjnych”) by B. Pastuszewska, M. Taciak and A. Tuśnio, and ‘Nutritional recommendations and nutritional value of poultry feed’ („Zalecenia żywieniowe i wartość pokarmowa pasz dla drobiu”) under the editorship of P. Konieczka, A. Tuśnio i S. Smulikowska (honorary editor).
