2026 in Warsaw.
The Kielanowski Institute of Animal Physiology and Nutrition Polish Academy of Sciences has for years been actively involved in organizing events being a part of the Science Festival in Warsaw. With a great pleasure we invite you to participate in the festival’s 30th anniversary edition, which will take place on September 18-27, 2026 in Warsaw.
We warmly invite you to take part in events organized by our Institute, and to explore other co-created by the Festival’s partners. For years, the Science Festival has brought together knowledge enthusiasts and leading experts – it is a wonderful opportunity to broaden your horizons!
Scientific research is only useful when it is shared with the public. The events organized by our Institute explain complex biological mechanisms in the most accessible way – from the secrets hidden within blood vessels and biological traps of addiction, through debunking myths about the animal world, to the fascinating microworld hidden in a household cupboard.
Below you can find the event schedule and warmly invite you to participation.
MEETINGS / FESTIVAL LECTURES
Location: Nowy Świat 72, 00-330 Warsaw. Sala im. Erazma Majewskiego no. 300 (3rd floor)
Lecturer: dr hab. Grzegorz Bełżecki
Date: Thuesday, September 22, 2026, 12:00–13:30
Description: We often hear that cow breeding contributes to climate change, and eating animal products leads to global warming. Is it true? Do cows really have a negative impact on the climate – and if so, can we counteract it? During the lecture we will try to look at the cow form other perspective – not only as a source of methane emissions, but also as an important element of ecological agricultural systems. We will learn how the ruminant body functions and why cattle play a vital role in preserving biodiversity. Also, we will explain why cattle are raised in semi-arid regions and what will happen when the cows disappear. The meeting will be a great opportunity to understand the correlation between farm animals, environment and humans. Join us and find out how much depends on… a cow!

3. ‘Why is it so hard to quit? Biological traps of addiction’
Lecturer: dr Bartosz Osuch
Date: Wednesday, September 23, 2026, 12:00–13:30
Description: Why is it so hard to quit? Is addiction a matter of weak will, or rather the result of changes occurring in the brain? During the lecture we will look at biological mechanisms of addiction and find out what makes it so easy to fall into addiction and so hard to break free from it? Finding the answer we will start form the reward system and the role of dopamine in the pleasure experience. Later we will talk about how the brain adapts to repeated exposure to psychoactive substances and why stress and activation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis increase the risk of relapse. The addiction is not only connected with the changes in the neuronal communication but also brain cell metabolism disorders. One of the tryptophan metabolic pathways – kynurenine pathway – plays an important role in the inflammation, stress responses and brain functioning. The manner how oxidative stress and mitochondrial dysfunction can affect the functioning of nerve cells and contribute to the perpetuation of the biological mechanisms of addiction will be also discussed. All these will allow us to present an addiction as a complex biological phenomenon involving the interplay of multiple systems – from reward mechanisms and stress responses to cellular metabolism. So, an addiction is at the same time the behavioural problem and the consequence of changes in the brain.
